I will ignore the fact that a year has past since my last post (my poor neglected blog) and I will go straight to the point.
A couple of months ago Iwanna, a very talented woman known as @iwannabehara, organised a Crochet Advent Calendar for Christmas, a crochet-along event on Instagram.
For this #adventcal2019 a group of 20 crocheters joined forces to create 24 new free patterns, one for each day of December, until Christmas.
So it’s the 23 of December and is my day to present my pattern, a crochet penguin to make as a last minute gift or Christmas decoration.
At the end of this post you will find links for the other patterns of the #adventcal2019.
Materials: You will need a 3 mm crochet hook. DK yarn in black, white, orange and red. Fiberfill for stuffing. A small pom pom. Tapestry needle. Stitch marker. Scissors. Safety eyes (optional).
Abbreviation: This pattern is use US terminology.
- R: round
- mc: magic circle
- sc: single crochet
- inc: increase (2 sc in same stitch)
- sc2tog: sc 2 together (decrease)
- hdc: half double crochet
- blo: back loops only
- sl st: slip stitch
- st(s): stitch(es)
- FO: fasten off
Note: Unless otherwise noted all the individual parts are worked in continuous rounds, use a stitch marker to keep track of your rounds.
Head
Use black yarn.
R1: in mc work 6 sc. (6 sts).
R2: (Inc) x 6. (12 sts).
R3: (1 sc, inc) x 6. (18 sts).
R4: (2 sc, inc) x 6. (24 sts).
R5: (3 sc, inc) x 6. (30 sts).
R6: (14 sc, inc) x 2. (32 sts).
R7-9: Sc around. (32 sts).
R10: (14 sc, sc2tog) x 2. (30 sts).
R11: (3 sc, sc2tog) x 6. (24 sts).
R12: (2 sc, sc2tog) x 6. (18 sts).
R13: (1 sc, sc2tog) x 6. (12 sts).
FO leave long tail for sewing.
Face
Use white yarn.
R1: In mc work 6 sc. (6 sts).
R2: (Inc) x 6. (12 sts).
R3: (5 sc, inc) x 2. (14 sts).
R4: 1 sc, 4 hdc in the next st, sl st, 4 hdc in the next st, 5 sc, inc, 4 sc. (21 sts).
R5: 2 sc, inc, inc, 1 sc, sl st, 1 sc, inc, inc, 3 sc, inc, 6 sl st, inc, 1 sc. (27 sts).
FO leave long tail for sewing.
Nose
Use orange yarn.
R1: In mc work 4 sc. (4 sts).
R2: (1 sc, inc) x 2. (6 sts).
R3: Sc around (6 sts) Join with a sl st to first st.
FO leave long tail for sewing.
Body
Start with white yarn.
R1: In mc work 6 sc. (6 sts).
R2: (Inc) x 6. (12 sts).
R3: (1 sc, inc) x 6. (18 sts).
R4: (2 sc, inc) x 6. (24 sts).
Change to black yarn.
R5: For this round work in the blo (11 sc, inc) x 2. (26 sts).
R7-8: Sc around. (26 sts).
R9: (11 sc, sc2tog) x 2 (24 sts).
R10: (2 sc, sc2tog) x 6. (18 sts).
R11: (1 sc, sc2tog) x 6. (12 sts).
Stuff the body with fiberfill.
R12: (Sc2tog) x 6. (6 sts).
FO use the tail to close R12 and weave in end.
Feet
Use orange yarn. Make 2.
R1: In mc work 6 sc. (6 sts).
R2: (2 sc, inc) x 2. (8 sts).
R3-4: Sc around. (8 sts).
R5: (Sc2tog) x 4. (4 sts).
FO use the tail to close R5 leave the remaining tail for sewing.
Wings
Use black yarn. Make 2.
R1: In mc work 4 sc. (4 sts).
R2: (1 sc, inc) x 2. (6 sts).
R3: (2 sc, inc) x 2. (8 sts).
R4-6: Sc around. (8 sts).
R7: (2 sc, sc2tog) x 2. (6 sts).
R8: Sc around. (6 sts).
FO leave long tail for sewing.
Hat
Use red yarn.
R1: In mc work 6 sc. (6 sts).
R2: (2 sc, inc) x 2. (8 sts).
R3: Sc around. (8 sts).
R4: (1 sc, inc) x 4. (12 sts).
R5: Sc around. (12 sts).
R6: (2 sc, inc) x 4. (16 sts).
R7: Sc around. (16 sts).
R8: (3 sc, inc) x 4. (20 sts).
Change to white yarn.
R9: (4 sc, inc) x 4. (24 sts).
FO Leave long tail for sewing.
Sew the pom pom on the hat.
Assembly
- Sew the face on the head.
- Place the safety eyes or stitch them with black yarn.
- Stuff the head.
- Sew the nose to the face.
- Sew the head to the body.
- Sew the wings to each side of the body.
- Sew the feet on the bottom of the body.
- Sew the hat on the head.
