Meet Althea The Witch!

Althea loves Halloween, it’s really her favorite celebration! With a twist of her wand and a whisper she can magically decorate her house in a single second.

With little help from Althea you will be able to decorate your house as well. Just follow the pattern twist your wand (crochet hook) and create this doll by yourself.


Pattern Information

Materials
Yarn: Fingering weight cotton yarn (50gr/125m) in the skin color of your choice, black, rust and purple.
For my sample I use Scheepjes Catona in the colorways: Petal Peach (263), Jet Black (110), Rust (388) and Ultra Violet (282).
Crochet Hook: 2.50 mm crochet hook.
Notions: Fiberfill for stuffing, 6 mm safety eyes, pins, tapestry needle, stitch marker and scissors.

Gauge
28 stitches and 27 rows in single crochet worked in the round, with 2.5 mm crochet hook = 10 cm.
Gauge is not important for this project. However, changes might affect the finished measurements.

Finished Measurements
Approx. 15 cm (5.9 in) tall.

Difficulty
Easy. Basic crochet and sewing skills required.

Abbreviations
This pattern is written in US terminology.
ch: chain
mc: magic circle
sc: single crochet
standing sc: place the slip knot on hook and make the stitch as normal
inc: increase 1 st (2 sc in the same st)
dec: decrease 1 st (single crochet 2 sts together)
dc: double crochet

Written Instructions

Legs

Use skin color yarn. Make two.

Round 1: In a mc work 6 sc. (6 sts).

Round 2: 6 inc. (12 sts).

Rounds 3-14: 12 rnds. 12 sc. (12 sts).

Fasten off and weave in the end.

Stuff the legs with fiberfill.

Body

Use black yarn.

Round 1: Connect the two legs together: Make 1 standing sc in any st of the legs. Work 11 sc around the that leg and 12 sc around the other leg. (24 sts).

Use black yarn to sew the gap between the legs.

Rounds 2-6: 5 rnds. 24 sc. (24 sts).

Stuff the body as you go with fiberfill.

Round 7: 24 sc blo. (24 sts).

Round 8: {4 sc, dec} 4 times. (20 sts).

Rounds 9-14: 6 rnds. 20 sc. (20 sts).

Round 15: {3 sc, dec} 4 times. (16 sts).

Round 16: {2 sc, dec} 4 times. (12 sts).

Round 17: {1 sc, dec} 4 times. (8 sts).

Change to skin color yarn and continue to the Head instructions.

Head

Use skin color yarn.

Round 1: 8 sc blo. (8 sts).

Round 2: {1 sc, inc} 4 times. (12 sts).

Round 3: {1 sc, inc} 6 times. (18 sts).

Round 4: {2 sc, inc} 6 times. (24 sts).

Round 5: {3 sc, inc} 6 times. (30 sts).

Round 6: {4 sc, inc} 6 times. (36 sts).

Rounds 7-14: 8 rnds. 36 sc. (36 sts).

Insert the safety eyes between rnds 10 and 11, approx. 8 sts apart.

Round 15: {4 sc, dec} 6 times. (30 sts).

Round 16: {3 sc, dec} 6 times. (24 sts).

Round 17: {2 sc, dec} 6 times. (18 sts).

Stuff the head with fiberfill.

Round 18: {1 sc, dec} 6 times. (12 sts).

Round 19: 6 dec. (6 sts).

Fasten off and leave a long tail. Weave the tail through the front loops of the remaining 6 stitches, then pull to close the hole. Weave in the end.

Use skin color yarn to embroider the nose, between rnds 8 and 9.

Skirt

Use black yarn.

Round 1: Make 1 standing sc in one of the front loops of Round 6 of the body. Work 23 sc in the front loops of Round 6. (24 sts).

Round 2: [Ch 3 (count as 1 dc), 1 dc], [2 dc] 23 times. (48 sts).

Rounds 3-4: 2 rnds. Ch 3 (count as 1 dc), 47 dc. (48 sts).

Fasten off and weave in the end.

Arms

Use skin color and black yarn. Make two.

Start with skin color yarn.

Round 1: In a mc work 6 sc. (6 sts).

Round 2: {1 sc, inc} 3 times. (9 sts).

Rounds 3-10: 8 rnds. 9 sc. (9 sts).

Change to black yarn.

Rounds 11-13: 3 rnds. 9 sc. (9 sts).

Stuff the arms lightly with fiberfill.

Flatten the top and work 4 sc through both layers to close the opening.

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Hair

Use rust yarn.

Round 1: In mc work 6 sc. (6 sts).

Round 2: 6 inc. (12 sts).

Round 3: {1 sc, inc} 6 times. (18 sts).

Round 4: {2 sc, inc} 6 times. (24 sts).

Round 5: {3 sc, inc} 6 times. (30 sts).

Round 6: {1 sc, ch 16, turn. Starting at the second ch from hook, work 15 sc} 10 times, {1 sc, ch 9, turn. Starting at the second ch from hook, work 8 sc} 2 times, {1 sc, ch 4, turn. Starting at the second ch from hook, work 3 sc} 6 times, {1 sc, ch 9, turn. Starting at the second ch from hook, work 8 sc} 2 times, {1 sc, ch 16, turn. Starting at the second ch from hook, work 15 sc} 10 times.

Close the round with a sl st in the first st.

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Hat

Use black and purple yarn.

Start with black yarn.

Round 1: In mc work 6 sc. (6 sts).

Round 2: 6 sc. (6 sts).

Round 3: {2 sc, inc} 2 times. (8 sts).

Rounds 4-5: 2 rnds. 8 sc. (8 sts).

Round 6: {3 sc, inc} 2 times. (10 sts).

Round 7-8: 2 rnds. 10 sc. (10 sts).

Round 9: {4 sc, inc} 2 times. (12 sts).

Round 10: 12 sc. (12 sts).

Change to purple yarn.

Round 11: {1 sc, inc} 6 times. (18 sts).

Round 12: 18 sc. (18 sts).

Change to black yarn.

Round 13: {2 sc, inc} 6 times. (24 sts).

Round 14: {3 sc, inc} 6 times. (30 sts).

Round 15: {4 sc, inc} 6 times. (36 sts).

Round 16: {5 sc, inc} 6 times. (42 sts).

Fasten off and weave in the end.

Assembly

• Sew the arms to the sides of the body.

• Sew the hair on the head.

• Sew the hat on the hair.

• Weave in any remaining ends.
