crochet eagle

As I was playing one night, with my yarn and crochet hooks, a little eagle started to take shape and I thought of sharing its pattern with you.

Materials:
Yarn: Cotton, fingering yarn in white, brown and yellow.
Crochet Hook: 2.5 mm.
Other Notions: Fiberfill for stuffing, 6 mm safety eyes (optional), tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors.

Finished Measurements:
Approx. 7 cm (3 in) tall, when made with suggested yarn weight and hook size.

Abbreviations:
The pattern is written in US terminology
R: Round
ch: chain
mc: magic circle
sc: single crochet
slst: slip stitch
inc: increase
dec: decrease
st(sts): stitch(es)
{…}x…: repeat instructions between {} x… times
(…): total number of sts of the round

Instructions

Eagle
Start with white yarn.
R1: In mc work 6 sc. (6 sts).
R2: {inc} 6 times. (12 sts).
R3: {1 sc, inc} 6 times. (18 sts).
R4: {2 sc, inc} 6 times. (24 sts).
R5: {3 sc, inc} 6 times. (30 sts).
R6: {4 sc, inc} 6 times. (36 sts).
R7-11: 36 sc. (36 sts).
If you use safety eyes insert them between rounds 8 and 9, 6 stitches apart.
Change to brown yarn.
R12-17: 36 sc. (36 sts).
R18: {4 sc, dec} 6 times. (30 sts).
R19: {3 sc, dec} 6 timesς. (24 sts).
R20: {2 sc, dec} 6 timesς. (18 sts).
Stuff the eagle with fiberfill.
R21: {1 sc, dec} 6 times. (12 sts).
R22: {dec} 6 timesς. (6 sts).
Fasten off and leave a long tail. Weave the tail through the front loops of the remaining 6 sts, then pull to close the hole. Weave in the ends.
If you didn’t use safety eyes, use black yarn to embroider them between rounds 8 and 9, 6 stitches apart.

Nose
Use yellow yarn.
R1: In mc work 6 sc. (6 sts).
R2: 6 sc. (6 sts).
Fasten off and leave a long tail.

Sew the nose between rounds 10 and 11.

Wings
Use brown yarn. Make two.
R1: In mc work 6 sc. (6 sts).
R2: {inc} 6 timesς. (12 sts).
R3: {1 sc, inc} 6 times. (18 sts).
R4-5: 18 sc. (18 sts).
R6: 5 dec, 8 sc. (13 sts).
R7: 13 sc. (13 sts).
R8: 3 dec, 7 sc. (10 sts).
R9: 10 sc. (10 sts).
R10: {dec} 5 times. (5 sts).
Fasten off and leave a long tail. Weave the tail through the front loops of the remaining 5 sts, then pull to close the hole. Weave in the ends.

Sew the wings at the sides of the eagle.

Legs
Use yellow yarn.
In mc work {3 sc, turn. 1 slst in the second st from the hook and in the next st. Slst in the mc} 2 times.
Fasten off and leave a long tail.

Sew the legs at the bottom of the eagle.
